Preparing for skull and spine X-rays involves patient education, removing metallic items, and maintaining stillness during imaging. Nurses ensure safety, assess for pregnancy, and support positioning—critical for accurate diagnosis in trauma and neurological care.
Definition
A skull X-ray is an imaging test that uses X-ray beams to produce images of the bones in the skull, including the facial bones, sinuses, and nasal structures. It is often used to diagnose fractures, infections, tumors, or congenital anomalies affecting the skull.
A spine X-ray is an imaging test that focuses on the vertebrae of the spinal column. It helps identify fractures, dislocations, degenerative changes, or abnormalities such as scoliosis or bone erosion. Spine X-rays are commonly used to assess trauma, chronic pain, or structural issues in the spine. Preparation for skull and Spine X-ray is explained in this topic
Purposes
Skull X-ray
To furnish information about the following:
- Presence of skull fracture.
- Position of pineal body.
- Unusual calcification.
- Size and shape of skull bones.
- Bone erosion.
- Abnormal vascularity.
Spine X-ray
To diagnose the following conditions:
- Wedging of collapsed vertebra.
- Erosion of bone caused by neoplasm.
- Irregular calcification as a result of inflammatory process.
- Narrowing of vertebral canal because of obstruction by neoplasm or protruding disk.
- Vertebral fractures and dislocations.
- Spondylosis.
- Spurs (sharp projections of bone).
- Trauma to vertebral column.
Procedure
| Nursing action | Rationale | |
| 1. | Explain the procedure to the patient. | Helps in cooperation of the patient. |
| 2. | Remove jewelry, dentures, hairclips, and glasses. | Presence of these articles interferes with procedure. |
| 3. | Send patient to X-ray department in wheelchair or stretcher with the case sheet and requisition form. | |
| 4. | Record in chart about the timing when patient was sent to X-ray department. | |
| 5. | After receiving patient back in ward, record the time of arrival and X-ray taken. |
Special Consideration
- Position the patient according to the area of the spine being imaged (e.g., cervical, thoracic, lumbar).
- Ensure proper alignment to avoid distortion of the spinal structures.
- Ask the patient to wear a hospital gown and remove any clothing or accessories with metal components, such as belts or zippers.
- Confirm if the patient is pregnant, as X-rays involve radiation exposure. If pregnant, alternative imaging methods like ultrasound or MRI may be considered.
- If a contrast agent is needed for enhanced imaging, ensure the patient is informed about the process and any potential side effects.
- Use lead aprons or shields to protect areas of the body not being imaged.
- Minimize radiation exposure by using the lowest effective dose.
- Encourage the patient to remain still and follow breathing instructions if required for the specific X-ray.
Clinical Pearls
- X-rays are often the first-line imaging, but CT or MRI may follow for more detailed evaluation.
- Radiation exposure is minimal, but always check pregnancy status before imaging.
- Patient positioning and stillness are crucial for clear images.
